Sydney, 21 November 2016 – Star drivers from the WRC joined team bosses and championship officials for a sparkling finale to a dramatic FIA World Rally Championship season 2016 in Sydney. More than 200 guests, including show business celebrities and dignitaries celebrated the campaign at the WRC Gala Awards in the historic Rocks area, in the shadow of the famous Harbour Bridge. Certina was happy to announce that the winner of the Certina Timing Award was Kiwi Hayden Paddon. After hurtling his Hyundai i20 down the famous El Condor mountain to outgun Ogier in YPF Rally Argentina’s Power Stage Paddon secured his maiden win.

Hayden Paddon and his co-driver John Kennard were unable to make it to Sydney in time to collect the Certina Timing Award trophy. That was put right when WRC Promoter managing director Oliver Ciesla presented the award during New Zealand’s Legend of Speed dinner in front of Prime Minister John Key and the who’s who of the country’s motorsport industry at the Vector Arena.

Certina also congratulates Ott Tànak for his award of WRC Driver of the year, voted by Rally fans who had the chance to take into their hands which driver would walk away with this lucky price. The 2016 WRC championship celebrated the end of an exciting year with this sparkling evening hosted at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. But Rally fans won’t have to wait long for the next season to start. The 2017 championship starts at Rallye Monte-Carlo on 19 - 22 January and marks the return of former world champions Toyota and Citroën to the series. New rules promise extra power, lighter cars, bigger rear wings and more aggressive looking challengers. And Certina won’t miss the chance to look extra closely in order to remain de best time keeper.
