DS Concept Extreme Shock Resistance Watches

DS Concept Extreme Shock Resistance is the reinforced construction Certina fits to watches made for repeated impact. Five engineered features work together to protect the movement, the dial and the crystal, at a level tested well beyond the ISO 1413 standard.

Five features, one reinforced construction

A secured movement holder

The movement is locked into the case with a thin, ring-shaped nut rather than a conventional fitting. It stays in position under vibration and shocks, where any play inside the case would translate into wear and loss of accuracy over time.

An embedded plate protecting the dial

An ultra-thin metal plate is set between the dial and the movement, binding the two into a single assembly. On impact, the dial cannot deform or shift out of alignment with the hands.

A reinforced and domed crystal

The sapphire crystal has been redesigned: reinforced through its thickness and, on selected models, slightly domed. The curve spreads shock waves across the whole surface instead of concentrating them at the point of impact.

An advanced O-ring sealing system

An O-ring gasket on the stem provides an additional layer of protection against water penetration. As a key element of the DS Concept, it helps ensure lasting reliability and supports the exceptional water resistance for which Certina watches are known.

A reinforced case back

Engineered for enhanced durability, the reinforced case back is a key pillar of the DS Concept. Designed to better absorb impacts and withstand external pressure, it helps safeguard the movement, ensuring lasting reliability and confidence in every situation.

Tested beyond the standard

Certina builds shock resistance from measured data. A dedicated testing device was developed to reproduce the impacts a wristwatch absorbs in real use. Its readings drove targeted improvements to three of these features: how the movement is held in the case, how the dial stays fixed, and how the crystal distributes force.

The result exceeds the requirements of ISO 1413, the reference standard for shock-resistant watches, by a wide margin. In testing, watches built with the complete construction withstood g-forces high enough to reach the load limit of the device itself.

The complete DS Concept construction

The DS Concept is the Double Security system fitted to every Certina since 1959. Across the collection, watches carry one or more of the five features described above, matched to their style, diameter and intended use. DS Concept Extreme Shock Resistance is defined by the complete set: all five, engineered and tested together as a single construction. It is this combination, rather than any feature on its own, that delivers the level of impact protection the range is built for.

Watches in the range

The range opened within the collections built for the most demanding use, DS Action and DS PH. Further models will join it as the complete construction extends across the collection.

Choosing within the range

Every watch in the range shares the same reinforced construction, so the choice comes down to conditions of use. Diving models certified to ISO 6425 add pressure resistance to impact resistance. Titanium cases reduce weight for long days on the wrist. Ceramic bezels hold their finish where the watch is handled roughly. Whichever model, the construction underneath is identical.
