PVD coating

PVD is the abbreviation for physical vapour deposition and refers to an extremely modern coating method by means of which a material, for instance gold, can be transferred to your choice of steel or titanium workpiece in vapour form. The result is as fine as it is durable: PVD is resistant, corrosion-resistant and very hard.

316L stainless steel

The 316L stainless steel, which Certina uses for cases, bracelets and clasps for instance, is extremely resistant, corrosion-resistant and hygienic. It contains only a very small proportion of nickel, which is not emitted when worn and therefore does not trigger any nickel allergies.

Antireflection treatment on one side

It is possible to enhance the quality of a sapphire crystal to an even greater extent by providing it with an anti-reflective coating on one or both sides. The Certina brand is becoming increasingly focussed on equipping its timepieces with an extremely high-quality anti-reflective coating on both sides, whereby several layers of this coating on both sides of the crystal ensure that it is possible to see through the timepieces in an optimum manner.

Sapphire crystal

Sapphire watch crystal is made of aluminium oxide powder (Al2O3) heated to over 2000 °C. The resultant sapphire nugget is cut with great precision into fine slices, trimmed and polished. Sapphire is extremely scratch-resistant, shock-resistant and is very transparent. This is why sapphire crystal is an essential element in the DS Concept and is therefore used by Certina in all of its models to protect the dials.

Water resistance

Up to a pressure of 10 bar (100 m)

This information about the water resistance states the specified overpressure and diving depth to which a watch can be subjected and still remain in working order. As a general rule, we do not recommend wearing watches that are water-resistant to less than 10 bar (100 m) when swimming or diving. All Certina timepieces can withstand a pressure of at least 10 bar (100 m) stand - some of our watches can even withstand considerably higher pressures!

Moon phase

The moon goes through an average cycle lasting 29.53 days. Depicting moon phases is a watchmaking complication which is both traditional and complex: The moon's current profile is presented through a cut-out in the dial by means of a rotating disc.

Precidrive™

The name of an innovative technology which ensures the utmost accuracy at Certina: The timepieces with Precidrive™ quartz calibres achieve real chronometer precision. With a rate deviation of +/-10 seconds per year, a Precidrive™ timepiece is around eight to ten times more accurate than traditional quartz timepieces.

End of life

Some Certina quartz timepieces - and all Precidrive(TM) models without exception, whether a three-hand variant or a chronograph - have an end of life (EOL) indicator. It indicates that the battery has reached the end of its life: When this is the case, the seconds hand continues to move, but in four-second increments only, and the battery should be replaced within the next two weeks.

Chronometer

A timepiece is only permitted to be called a chronometer if it has been awarded a certificate of precision as a result of passing demanding tests set by an independent test institute. The "Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres", known as COSC for short, is the official Swiss chronometer testing institute, which certifies both mechanical calibres and quartz movements.

COSC certification

Exact, more exact – chronometer. A chronometer is a watch whose precision has been officially tested and certified by an independent testing laboratory. This Certina model has been tested by the Contrôle officiel suisse des chronomètres (COSC), the official Swiss testing authority, and awarded the quality certificate.

Moon Phase

The moon phase display is a rotating disc that displays the age of the moon through an aperture in the dial. It can be set by referring to a current lunar calendar. A complex complication, and unquestionably one of the most attractive displays.
