Rough diamonds are polished for use in the watch and jewellery industry and assessed by means of the four "C" criteria: Cut: The cut refers to the individual shape of the diamond. The more meticulously and professionally the stone has been faceted, the more intensively it reflects the light. Certina uses brilliant-cut diamonds for the case and octagon-cut ones for the dial. Colour: At first glance, you would be forgiven for thinking that all diamonds are white. However, experts distinguish between fine nuances in shades - Certina only uses Top Wesselton diamonds. Clarity: Almost every diamond has minimal inclusions which can be detected by a professional through a magnifying glass but are usually invisible to the naked eye. Certina processes diamonds from the coveted VSI (very small inclusions) grade. Carat: The carat is the unit that defines the weight of a diamond. One carat is equal to 0.2 g. The diamonds used by Certina have different carat numbers depending on the model - they are noted for each watch in the sales manual. Certina only uses diamonds which fulfil the conditions of the Kimberley Process, an international system for certifying rough diamonds. It helps to prevent trade in smuggled diamonds - referred to as "blood diamonds" - which are used to finance wars.

MOP is the acronym for mother-of-pearl. This organic material, which Certina uses for particularly precious dials on women's watches, comes from the innermost layer of shell of some molluscs. Iridescent, shimmery mother-of-pearl is very brittle and must be processed with great care, which makes it even more valuable.

PrecidriveTM
The name of an innovative technology which ensures the utmost accuracy at Certina: The timepieces with Precidrive(TM) quartz calibres achieve real chronometer precision. With a rate deviation of +/-10 seconds per year, a Precidrive(TM) timepiece is around eight to ten times more accurate than traditional quartz timepieces.
End of life
Some Certina quartz timepieces - and all Precidrive(TM) models without exception, whether a three-hand variant or a chronograph - have an end of life (EOL) indicator. It indicates that the battery has reached the end of its life: When this is the case, the seconds hand continues to move, but in four-second increments only, and the battery should be replaced within the next two weeks.

A timepiece is only permitted to be called a chronometer if it has been awarded a certificate of precision as a result of passing demanding tests set by an independent test institute. The "Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres", known as COSC for short, is the official Swiss chronometer testing institute, which certifies both mechanical calibres and quartz movements.

It is possible to enhance the quality of a sapphire crystal to an even greater extent by providing it with an anti-reflective coating on one or both sides. The Certina brand is becoming increasingly focussed on equipping its timepieces with an extremely high-quality anti-reflective coating on both sides, whereby several layers of this coating on both sides of the crystal ensure that it is possible to see through the timepieces in an optimum manner.
