Case material
316L stainless steel
The 316L stainless steel, which Certina uses for cases, bracelets and clasps for instance, is extremely resistant, corrosion-resistant and hygienic. It contains only a very small proportion of nickel, which is not emitted when worn and therefore does not trigger any nickel allergies.
Bezel material
PVD coating
PVD is the abbreviation for physical vapour deposition and refers to an extremely modern coating method by means of which a material, for instance gold, can be transferred to your choice of steel or titanium workpiece in vapour form. The result is as fine as it is durable: PVD is resistant, corrosion-resistant and very hard.
316L stainless steel
The 316L stainless steel, which Certina uses for cases, bracelets and clasps for instance, is extremely resistant, corrosion-resistant and hygienic. It contains only a very small proportion of nickel, which is not emitted when worn and therefore does not trigger any nickel allergies.
Aluminium
Aluminium is very neutral, hypoallergenic, corrosion-resistant and temperature-resistant. However, above all, it is extremely lightweight: Three times lighter than stainless steel and around one and a half times lighter than titanium. These are some of the qualities used by Certina for manufacturing extremely lightweight cases and clasps. The brand uses anodised aluminium only: Not only does this extremely durable protective layer enable the material to be additionally hardened, it allows it to be coloured in any colour you choose too.
Super-LumiNova
SLN is the acronym for Super-LumiNova®, a phosphorescent luminescent material. The BG W9 type of SLN, used by Certina, emits the stored light in the form of a bluish glow in the dark. SLN poses no risk to health and is used to coat hands, indices and bezels. Its brightness decreases in the dark after some time, but it is automatically recharged when light strikes it.

Antireflection treatment on one side
It is possible to enhance the quality of a sapphire crystal to an even greater extent by providing it with an anti-reflective coating on one or both sides. The Certina brand is becoming increasingly focussed on equipping its timepieces with an extremely high-quality anti-reflective coating on both sides, whereby several layers of this coating on both sides of the crystal ensure that it is possible to see through the timepieces in an optimum manner.
Sapphire crystal
Sapphire watch crystal is made of aluminium oxide power (Al2O3) heated to over 2000 °C. The resultant sapphire nugget is cut with great precision into fine slices, trimmed and polished. Sapphire is extremely scratch-resistant, shock-resistant and is very transparent. This is why sapphire crystal is an essential element in the DS Concept and is therefore used by Certina in all of its models to protect the dials.
Water resistance
Diver's watch 300m according to ISO 6425:2018
A divers' watch is a water-resistant and pressure-resistant wristwatch. Certina tests each and every one of these timepieces in water for three hours, as is required by ISO standard 6425. In 2017, Certina became a proud partner of the Sea Turtle Conservancy. The Florida-based organisation, whose primary aim is to ensure the survival of the sea turtle and conserve its habitats in the Caribbean, was founded in 1959 - the same year that Certina developed the ultra-resistant DS Concept.
